Lieutenant Robert Thorburn

Lieutenant Robert Brown Thorburn, 4th Regiment, South African Infantry. He was killed in France, aged 39, on the 15th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of the late Elizabeth Thorburn and James Thorburn of Convent Cottage, Jedburgh. He had served as a Regular Soldier with the Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles )as Pipe Major and afterwards with the Transvaal Scottish in the German South West Africa campaign. He was then commissioned in October 1915 going to France in June 1916. He is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” He Was Loved By All “.
