Private William Thomson, 1st/4th ( Territorial, Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles ), Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action at Gallipoli. aged 20, on the 28th June 1915. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of the late Robert and Jane Thomson of 5 Hope Street, Leith. Before enlisting he had been employed in the office of a Chartered Accountant in Edinburgh. He had been involved in the Quintinshill railway disaster at Greta but had escaped uninjured. He fell in the attack on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba which succeeded but with very heavy casualties as ever especially among the Officers. 9 Officers and 57 Other Ranks were killed and 7 Officers and 147 Other Ranks were wounded. In addition 6 Officers and 141 Other Ranks were posted missing. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. The photos show troops in trenches on Gallipoli.
