Private John Ward

Private John James Ward, 5th Battalion, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action in North Africa, aged 34, on the 24th October 1942. He had been born in the Gorbals, Glasgow and was the son of the late Frank and Maggie Ward and the husband of Christina Ward of 5 Blackhills Close and 44 Castlegate, Jedburgh. Before enlisting he had been a plasterers labourer.  The Battalion was part of the 51st (Highland) Division and he fell in the opening stages of the Battle of El Alamein. The Battalion achieved all its objectives which included opening gaps in the enemy minefields to allow the tank formations to pass through. Casualties were suffered from enemy artillery and mortar fire. He is buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt where his headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man”.
