Private Andrew Chalmers Steele, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. He died in France on Service, aged 29, on the 9th December 1918. He had been born in 1889 in Selkirk and was the son of Grace and the late Robert Steele of Victoria Crescent, Selkirk. He was the husband of Helen Steele of Victoria Crescent, Selkirk and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Extension, Rouen, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” Abide With Me”. He had been employed as a clerk in Hamilton when he enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry in March 1915. In March 1917 he was posted to the Household Battalion in France and when this Unit was disbanded in early 1918 he was posted to the Scots Guards. After being wounded in action during the “Advance to Victory” he had to have a leg amputated and he died in the 12th General Hospital in Rouen.
