Able Seaman Thomas Lockie, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He died at sea aboard the S.S. “Adenwen” on 25th March 1917 aged 19. He was the son of Robert and Nellie Lockie of the Temperance Hotel, Selkirk and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. He had been born in Barrhead and was employed as an ironmongers assistant before enlisting in the Royal Naval Division in April 1916. In September he was transferred to the R.N.V.R. to be a gunner aboard the Defensively Armed Merchant Ship the “Adenwen” The ship was a general cargo vessel of 3,798 tons built in 1913 by Dickinson John &Sons Ltd of Sunderland. On 25th March the ship was on passage from Cuba to Liverpool with a cargo of sugar. when she was torpedoed by UC-65 near the Arklow Light Vessel off Ireland. 10 crew were lost. The submarine was later sunk with all hands on 3rd November 1917 by H.M.S. C15.
