Flying Officer George Anderson Hutcheson, Royal Air Force. He was killed in a flying accident on 11th June 1940 aged 30. He was the son of John and Mabel Hutcheson of St Aidans, Melrose and the husband of Jean Hutcheson of Riding Mill, Northumberland. He was cremated at Warriston Crematorium, Edinburgh. He had been educated at St Marys, Melrose and Merchiston, Edinburgh and before joining his Squadron on the outbreak of War he had run a Motor business in Newcastle -Upon-Tyne. Pre War he had joined a flying club and then the Auxiliary Air Force from where he had been commissioned in May 1940. He flew with 264 ( Madras Presidency ) Squadron which operated the Boulton Paul Defiant fighter from Duxford. ( The Defiant had originally been designed as a day fighter but its performance meant it was no match for the much faster German Messerschmitt BF 109s and in the summer of 1940 it was withdrawn from day operations and given a night fighter role ).
