Aircraftman 1st Class John Bain

Aircraftman 1st Class John Bain, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He died on Active Service on 25th November 1940, aged 38, whilst serving with 951 Balloon Squadron, R.A.F. He had been born in Edinburgh to John and Jessie Bain and was the husband of Alexandrina Bain of 2 Eildon Terrace, Melrose. He is buried in Wairds Cemetery, Melrose where his Headstone is inscribed ” To Live In Our Hearts Is Not To Die”. Before enlisting he had run a Hairdressers business in Melrose. His Balloon Squadron had been formed in 1939 at Pucklechurch in order to help protect the Filton Aircraft factory as well as Bristol Docks.
