Private John Scott, 49th ( Edmonton Regiment ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 35, on the 15th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Langholm and was the son of the late George and Isabella of Yetholm Mains and Walker’s Knowe, Jedburgh. He is commemorated on the Vimy memorial, France. he had emigrated to Canada and before enlisting in July 1915 he had been employed as a teamster in the Peace River area of Alberta. The photos show troops on the Somme and the colour image depicts a peaceful Somme landscape today with “no gas no barbed wire no guns firing now”.
