Lance Corporal John Sharpe

Lance Corporal John Sharpe, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action on 28th September 1915, aged 25, during the Battle of Loos and is buried in Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemetery, France. He was the son of Robert and Margaret Sharpe of Bowmont Cottage, Yetholm, Roxburghshire and prior to enlisting he was employed as a grocer in Aberfoyle. He is also commemorated on the War Memorial there.  He was a well known local runner and won the Glasgow Cup several times at the Gartmore Games. His Headstone is inscribed “Dearly Missed”. The first  photograph shows Highlanders marching up to the line at Loos and the second shows the village of Loos after its capture on the 25th September. The artist’s illustration depicts a Battalion attack at Loos led by their pipers.
