Lance Corporal John Sharpe, 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action on 28th September 1915, aged 25, during the Battle of Loos and is buried in Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemetery, France. He was the son of Robert and Margaret Sharpe, Bowmont Cottage, Yetholm, Roxburghshire and prior to enlisting he was employed as a grocer in Aberfoyle. He is also remembered on the War Memorial there. His Headstone is inscribed “Dearly Missed”. The photograph shows part of the Loos battlefield looking towards the German front line where shells are bursting.
