Private John Storie

Private John Storie, 6th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 3rd May 1917 during the Battle of Arras aged 24. He had been born in Selkirk and was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Storie of Fauldshope, Kirkhope and Gilmanscleugh, Selkirkshire and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. When he enlisted he had been living at Mount Benger, Yarrow. He fell during the disastrous and hurried attack on “Greenland Hill” which took place at night on unreconnoitred German positions. It seems that three companies of the Battalion had penetrated far into the German positions until the latter cut round behind them and cut them off from the British lines. Only some 50 men managed to return to British lines under cover of darkness. Casualties were 11 Officers and 252 Other Ranks killed or missing and 4 Officers and 152 Other Ranks wounded. The photographs show Allied troops during the Battle.
