Private George Cock, 12th ( Service ) Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France whilst on patrol on 7th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, aged 35. He was the son of the late Robert Cock of Doddington Mill, Wooler and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, France. He was the first man from Doddington to die in the War. His brother William was serving on the Salonica Front and survived the War. The autumn rains turned the shell churned chalky ground into a glutinous quagmire which made all movement very difficult as can be seen from the photographs.
