Private Matthew Burge

Private Matthew Burge, ( probably ) 23rd ( 4th Tyneside Scottish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on 29th April 1917 during the Battle of Arras, aged 22, and is buried in Brown’s Copse Cemetery, Roeux. He was the husband of Mary Henderson (formerly Burge) of Toyston Terrace, North Broomhill, Morpeth, Northumberland. He fell in an attack on the infamous Chemical Works at Rouex which despite some initial success failed with heavy loss in the face of intense machine gun fire. The photos show troops at Arras.
