Private William Laidler

Private William Laidler, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 14th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France.  He had been born in Tweedmouth and had enlisted at Fort George, Inverness. He fell in the successful assault on Bazentin Ridge although opportunities were missed to capture High Wood which held out for two more months and cost many more casualties. The first photograph shows a group of Seaforths checking a captured German dugout and the second shows a Battalion roll call after the fighting.
