Private William Dumble, 1st/7th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 15th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He fell in the confused fighting in and around “Quadrilateral Trench ” where attack was followed by counter attack with the Battalion losing some 147 Officers and Other Ranks killed and a further 6 Officers and 219 Other Ranks. wounded. The photographs show British troops on the Somme. The colour photograph shows the impressive Memorial raised near Wieltje in the Ypres Salient to Commemorate the 50th ( Northumbrian ) Division of which the Battalion was part until February 1918 when it was transferred to the 42nd ( East Lancashire ) Division and used in a lines of communication role.
