Private Robert H. Stokoe, 2nd/5th ( Territorial ) Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action in Belgium on 27th November 1917, aged 21, during the Third Battle of Ypres. He was the son of Thomas Stokoe of 66 Shielfield Terrace, Tweedmouth and is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. His brother James also fell ( see above ). The photographs show the dire condition of the battlefield where the incessant heavy shelling had destroyed the fragile Flanders drainage system and turned the ground into a desolate quagmire.
