Private John Knowles, 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died in France on 12th May 1917, aged 38, of wounds received during the Battle of Arras. He was the husband of Ellen Knowles of 198 Main Street, Tweedmouth and is buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Arras, France. Before enlisting he had worked at Messrs Allan’s Woodyard and left his widow and two children. The photograph shows British troops accompanied by a tank in the main street of a captured village near Arras.
