Sergeant James Stevenson, 5th/6th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in France , aged 20, on the 18th November 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Tweedmouth and was the son of James and Isabella Stevenson of Morrison Street, Edinburgh. In 1911 he had been employed as a Boiler Maker’s apprentice.He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. At that time the Battalion were in the village of Mailly-Maillet from where where they furnished carrying parties for units in the front line. By now ground conditions were appalling and as ever casualties were suffered from sporadic shelling. The photos give an idea of the ground conditions.
