Private Arthur Walkenshaw, 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 19th August 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been born in Tweedmouth and had enlisted in Newcastle. He fell in an attack on Turkish positions at “Hetman Chair” near Scimitar Hill during the Suvla Bay part of the Campaign which had been designed to try and divert Turkish forces from the South of the Peninsula and to perhaps even cut them off. However too much time was wasted before the commencement of the advances thus allowing the Turks to prepare strong defensive positions to be able to halt any meaningful progress. The photographs show troops at Suvla.
