Private Kenward Thyne

Private Kenward John Thyne, 7th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. (  The Battalion was part of the 26th Brigade of the 9th Scottish  Division ). He was killed in action, aged 17, on the Somme on 14th July 1916  and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial , Thiepval, France.  He had been born in Lasswade, Mid Lothian and was the son of Kenward and Joanna Thynne. When he enlisted in 1914 he had lived with the Rev. D. D. MacDonald at Swinton Manse. When he enlisted, under age, he used the name Kenneth.  He fell in the attack on Longueval where progress was slow due to the strong German positions and heavy casualties were suffered. The first photo shows a group of Seaforths checking a captured German dugout and the second shows the Battalion roll call after the fighting.
