Private Robert Frier

Private Robert Frier, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in Palestine on 18th April 1917, aged 34, during the Second Battle of Gaza and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. He was the son of James and Jane Frier of 10 Hall Street, Galashiels and the husband of Christina Frier of Stow Brae, Stow. In 1902 e had enlisted in the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars and served in India returning home in 1909. He was then employed as a postman in Stow before enlisting. He was killed by Turkish shellfire along with Private W. Bell from Lauder as preparations were being made for the attack on Ali Muntar which was to commence the following day.
