Private Peter Anderson

Private Peter Anderson, possibly,10th ( Service ) Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).He died in Belgium on 16th August 1917, age 37, during the Third Battle of Ypres and is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No.3, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Shandon to John and Agnes Anderson of Stow then in Midlothian but now in the Scottish Borders and the husband of Mrs. A.T. Anderson, of 20 Picken Street, Riccarton, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. The photographs show the desolation of the Flanders battlescape where the incessant shelling had destroyed the drainage systems. The colour photo shows the impressive Memorial raised to commemorate the men of the 9th and 15th ( Scottish ) Divisions who fell in the Battle. It was erected on the Frezenberg Ridge near the village of Zonnebeke in the Ypres Salient and it was unveiled in August 2007. A plaque in both Gaelic and English is affixed to the front of the Memorial and has a quote from the Declaration of Arbroath inscribed thereon.
