Lance Corporal David Hill

Lance Corporal David Hill, 6th ( Service ) Battalion Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action, aged 25, on 13th August, 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France. He had been born in West Calder and was the son of William and Agnes Hill of Fernihurst Cottages, Stow and Smailholm Mains, Kelso. He had been a police constable with Edinburg City Police when he enlisted in June 1915 joining his Battalion in France in October of that year. ( his name was added to the Memorial in 2012 by his relative Danny Miles ). The photos show Scottish troops on the Somme and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today ” with no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
