Private Alexander Pringle

Private Alexander Pringle, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds in Palestine on 5th December 1917, aged 22. He had been born in Stow and was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Pringle of Earlston Road,Stow and is buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Kantara, Israel. On 28th November the Battalion together with one Company from the 1st/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers and two Companies from 1st/5th K.O.S.B. had come under attack by the Turks at a village called Suffa. The battle raged for two days until the enemy were finally repulsed. 1 Officer and 7 Other Ranks were killed and 1 Officer and 22 Other Ranks were wounded. It would seem that Private Pringle was one of the wounded. His Headstone is inscribed ” Too Far For Us Your Grave To See But Not Too Far To Think Of Thee”. The photographs shows the Battalion on the march in Palestine. The three soldiers are Alec Lawrie, Willie Cockburn and Jim Murray all of whom played football for Coldstream F.C.
