Lance Sergeant Harry McGuire M.M.

Lance Sergeant Harry Maguire, M.M., 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action, aged 31, in France on the 16th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Lanark in 1885 and was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Maguire. She had died in Selkirk in 1891 and had lived in South Port, Selkirk with her husband and her eight children. After her death the family had moved to Lanark. Harry had enlisted in Motherwell and joined his Battalion in France in February 1915. He was killed in the notorious High Wood sector of the front and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. ( His brother Joe also fell-see below ) The photographs show Scottish troops on the Somme while the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today.
