Sergeant George Turnbull

Sergeant George Turnbull, 14th ( Victoria ) Battalion, Australian Infantry. He was killed at Gallipoli, aged 28, on the 12th May 1915. He had been born in Selkirk in 1887 and was the son of Alexander and Mary Turnbull of Back Row, Selkirk. He is buried in Courtney’s And Steel’s Post Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey where his Headstone is inscribed ” Their Glory Shall Not Be Blotted Out”. He had emigrated to Australia in 1911 after serving at home with the 4th K.O.S.B as a Territorial where he was part of the pipe band as shown in his photo. In Australia he had been employed on a farm at Macedon, Victoria. He landed at what became known as ” ANZAC Cove with his Battalion on Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915. At the time of his death the Australian and Turkish lines were sometimes only yards apart. The photos show Australian troops at ANZAC. ( His brother James also fell – see below ).
