Private James Cunningham

Private James Cunningham. 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds in hospital in Sheffield on the 24th August 1918 aged 31. He had been born in Selkirk in 1887 and was the son of the late Thomas and Jessie Cunningham of 24 Heatherlie Terrace, Selkirk. Before enlisting in 1915 and joining his Battalion in Egypt he had been employed in Cunning and Hall’s mill in Selkirk. The Battalion moved to France in April 1918 to help stem the German Spring Offensives and it was there he was wounded by shrapnel and evacuated to Wharncliffe Hospital in Sheffield where he died. He is buried in Selkirk Cemetery.
