Ordinary Seaman Robert Bennett

Ordinary Seaman Robert Elder Bennett, Royal Navy. He was lost at sea, aged 19, on the 22nd October 1943. He had been born in Selkirk in 1923 and was the son of Colin and Jane Bennett of 23 Heatherlie Park, Selkirk. He is commemorated on the Lowestoft Naval Memorial, Suffolk. He had been a member of the Home Guard before enlisting in the Navy. He was one of the crew of H.M. Trawler ” Orfasy”, Royal Naval Patrol Vessel which was sunk with the loss of all 34 crew by the U-68 off Liberia, West Africa whilst she was escorting the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ” Litiopa”. ( The submarine was herself sunk on 10th April 1944 by aircraft from the U.S.S Guadalcanal with 1 survivor ).
