Lance Corporal Robert Armstrong

Lance Corporal Robert McVittie Armstrong, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died from wounds suffered during the Battle of Third Ypres in the 36th Casualty Clearing Station, France on the 7th November 1917 aged 29. He had been born in Westruther, Berwickshire and was the son of Agnes and the late John Armstrong of Templehall, Midlem, Selkirkshire and 71 High Street, Jedburgh. He is buried in Zuydcoote Military Cemetery, Nord, France where his Headstone is inscribed ” Rest In Peace Till We Meet Again “. The Battalion was part of the 26th Brigade in the 9th ( Scottish) Division. The photos give an idea of the atrocious ground conditions where the incessant shelling had destroyed the Flanders drainage system.
