Lance Corporal Francis Imray

Lance Corporal Francis James Imray, 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He died on Service, aged 30, In Borneo on the 23rd October 1944. He had been born in Glasgow in 1914 and was the son of Catherine and the late James Imray of Green Square, Selkirk. Before enlisting as a Regular Soldier in 1935 he had been employed at the Dunsdale Mill in Selkirk. The Battalion was sent to Singapore in 1937 and he was captured when the garrison surrendered to the Japanese on the 15th February 1942. He was transported to Labuan in Borneo where after a brutal imprisonment and hard labour he died from malaria and beri-beri. He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.
