Galley Boy Leonard Pieroni

Galley Boy Leonard Pieroni, Merchant Navy. He was lost at sea, aged 16, on the 15th June 1942. He had been born in Selkirk in 1925 and was the son of Pearl Pieroni and grandson of Pietro and Louisa Pieroni of 29 Curror Street, Selkirk. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. He was a member of the St John’s church choir and had served in the Home Guard for a year. He was aboard the M.V. ” Pelayo” which was in convoy from Gibraltar to Swansea carrying 755 tons of Government stores and scrap iron. 15 of the 36 crew were lost when the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-552.
