Corporal James Riddell

Corporal James Riddell, Royal Army Service Corps att. Royal Artillery. He died at sea on Service, aged 23, on the 24th June 1944. He had been born in Selkirk in 1921 and was the son of James and Annie Riddell of 11 Anderson Road, Selkirk. On the outbreak of the War he had enlisted in the K.O.S.B. but was posted to France with the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was later posted to Malaya and was with the R.A.S.C. when Singapore fell on the 15th February 1942. He escaped to Java but was captured in march 1943. He died when he was being transported to Japan and was buried at sea. He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.
