Sergeant Andrew Fortune

Sergeant Andrew Fortune, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Burma on 23rd January 1944, aged 24. He was the son of Helen Jackson Fortune who was an outworker and is buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma. He fell in the fighting around ” Able ” Hill where many of the casualties were caused by British artillery mistaking the attacking Borderers for Japanese. ( The C.W.G.S. has his rank as Corporal as does the book “Borderers in Battle”). His uncle and namesake had been killed in the Great War in October 1917, aged 21.
