Private Peter Armstrong

Private Peter Armstrong, 7th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 26, on the second day of the Battle of Loos 26th September 1915. He had been born in Roxburgh and was the son of William and Janet Armstrong of Heiton, Roxburghshire and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. He had enlisted in November 1914 in Kelso and had sailed to France with his Battalion in July 1915. The first photo shows Scottish troops marching up to the line and the second depicts an actual assault with the troops disappearing into the gas which the British had used for the first time. The artist’s illustration shows the Camerons in an attack at Loos.
