Private Frank Dickson, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds at sea, aged 25, on the 7th June 1915. He had been born in Hawick and was the son of John and Margaret Dickson of East Boonraw, Roberton and he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. ( His brothers Robert and William also fell during the War – see below ). He was a Regular Soldier and had spent over 8 years in the Army, mostly in India. The Battalion had been stationed in Lucknow at the outbreak of the War. He was probably wounded during the Third Battle of Krithia which was fought on the 4th June. This was a general assault meant to cut the Peninsula in two but could not breach the Turkish defences. The K.O.S.B. did get into enemy trenches but had to retire due to failure on the flanks. According to reports they had ” put up a brilliant show”.
