Private George Shearlaw

Private George Shearlaw, 50th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps ( Infantry ). He died on Service, ,aged 24, on the 26th August 1918. He had been born in Whittinghame, East Lothian and was the son of Janet and the late George Shearlaw of Greenhead farm, Reston and Lumsden, Coldingham. He had originally enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders but was posted to the M.G.C. in France He was made Prisoner of War in May 1918 during the German Spring Offensives and died in a German Field hospital. He is buried in Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France. His brother Adam also fell – see below. The M.G.C. used the Vickers Mk. 2 water cooled gun in both offensive and defensive roles.
