Lieutenant James Robert Dundas McEwan McEwan, 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France, aged 20, on the 12th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.  He had been born in Edinburgh and was the son of Robert and Mary McEwan of Marchmont House, Polwarth and Bartochat, Colmonell, Ayrshire. He had been educated at Eton College and was from there commissioned into the R.S.F. He went to France in February 1915 and was promoted in April 1915. He is commemorated on the Thiepval; Memorial, Somme, France. He fell in a local attack near the infamous Butte de Warlencourt which cost the Battalion 9 Officers ( 3 killed ) and 261 Other Ranks. By that the the autumn rains had turned the battlefield into a glutinous quagmire making all movement very difficult as can be seen from the photos.
