Gunner Peter Hendry

Gunner Peter Geddes Hendry, 326th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was accidentally killed in a training camp near Arras on 6th February 1918, aged 20. He had been born in Mordington and was the son of Reverend P.G. Hendry and Margaret Hendry of  Paxton Manse, Paxton, Berwickshire and is buried in Villiers Station Cemetery, France. His Headstone is  inscribed ” The third Son Of Rev. P. G. & Margaret Hendry, Paxton, Berwickshire”. He was born in 1897 ,was the Dux of Berwick Grammar School and had studied Medicine at Edinburgh University from 1916-1917. The siege batteries used heavy howitzers which were used to destroy trenches and gun emplacements. ( His brother John had already fallen at Gallipoli in 1915- see above ).
