Private George Baird, 5th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in Holland, aged 24, on 4th November 1944 during the Battle for Flushing on Walcheren in Holland ( Operation Infatuate ).. He had been born in Tweedmouth and was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Baird formerly of the “Travellers Arms” in Berwick- upon- Tweed and is buried in Bergen-Op- Zoom, Holland. He had been employed as a joiner in Berwick when he enlisted in 1941 He fell in the fight for the Middleburg part of the German defences. The Battle cost the Battalion 9 killed and 53 wounded. ( Walcheren had to be cleared of enemy forces so as to clear the port of Antwerp for Allied use ). The photographs show British troops during the Battle.
