Private James Smith, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died at Gallipoli on 13th July 1915 of wounds suffered during the ” Charge ” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah on 12th July. He was the son of Henry Smith of Dalcove Mains, Kelso and is buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been born in Hawick and had enlisted in Jedburgh. His brother George also fell ( see above ). The first photo shows Achi Baba marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the battlefield and was never captured. The second shows the Borderers attacking at Gallipoli.
