Private Thomas Gray

Private Thomas Gray, 13th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He died on Service, aged 26, in a Prisoner of War Camp at Wulkau, Stendal, Germany on the 23rd October 1918. He had been born at Cockburnspath and was the son of Thomas and Janet Gray of Cove, Cockburnspath. He had landed with his Battalion in France in July 1915 and was captured at Vermelles in May 1916. He is buried in Berlin south Western Cemetery, Germany. On the 13th May 1916 the Battalion was subjected to a surprise German assault  near the Hoenzollern Redoubt in the Loos sector of the Front. After a devastating bombardment some of the front line trenches were lost and 236 Other Rank were killed wounded and missing. It may have been here Private Gray was captured.
