Private Robert Robertson

Private Robert Robertson, 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in Belgium. on 12th April 1918, aged 26 during the German Offensive on the River Lys and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Ploegsteert, Belgium. He had been born in Nenthorn and was the son of Robert and Annie Robertson of Newton Don, Nenthorn. The Battalion had just relieved the 7th Argylls near Locon when German forces worked round their left flank. Desperate fighting checked the advance and by nightfall the lines were secure and the Battalion was relieved on the night of the 14th April. Casualties were heavy with 1 Officer and 14 Other Ranks killed and 1 Officer and 107 Other Ranks wounded. In addition 247 Other Ranks were missing some of whom would probably have been Prisoners of War. The photos show Allied troops in defensive positions during the fighting.
