Private Thomas Reid, 6th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in Belgium on 17th December 1915, aged 22 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Sprouston and was the son of Christina and the late David Reid of Longnewton Mill, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire. Before enlisting in May 1915 he had been employed as a ploughman at Magdalenhall, Mertoun and had joined his Battalion in France in October 1915. At that time the Battalion were holding trenches in the Zillebeke sector of the Ypres Salient and suffered losses through enemy shelling and sniping.
