Sergeant George Smart

Sergeant George Henderson Smart, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of wounds in a Bristol hospital aged 23, on 13th August 1918. He had been born in Melrose to Thomas and Agnes Smart of Huntly House, Gattonside, Melrose and is buried in Wairds Cemetery, Melrose. He had gone with the Battalion to Gallipoli where he had contracted dysentery and had been evacuated back to the U.K. He then rejoined the Battalion in Palestine where he was a member of the Lewis Gun section. He was wounded in action in Palestine and evacuated to the Beauforts War Hospital in Bristol where he died .( He was the brother of Thomas Smart , see above ).
