Private Thomas Walker

Private Thomas Walker, 14th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 38, on 26th October 1917 during the Battle of Third Ypres. He had been born in Melrose and was the son of Isabella and the late Alexander Walker of Newstead, Melrose and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He had been employed as a groom/gardener to Dr. Calvert of ” The Laurels”, Melrose when he enlisted in the 1st Royal Dragoons before being transferred into the Royal Warwickshires. The photographs show the desolation of the Flanders battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the fragile drainage systems and created a flooded moonscape.
