Private Bruce Stewart, 15th Battalion ( 1st Edinburgh ), Royal Scots. He died of wounds on 13th June 1917, aged 35, whilst a Prisoner of War in Germany and is buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Germany. He had been born in Lilliesleaf to William and Mary of Darnick then Tweed View, Newstead, Melrose. He had been an apprentice in Melrose and then an ironmonger in Castle Douglas before enlisting in Dumfries November 1914. He had been wounded by shrapnel and taken prisoner at Monchy during the Battle of Arras and had died in hospital in Hamelin, Germany. His Headstone is inscribed ” He Died A True Son And Soldier “.
