Flight Sergeant Thomas Sanderson

Flight Sergeant Thomas Sanderson, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was lost on Air Operations over Egypt on 6th November 1942 aged 24. He had been born in Melrose to David and Mary Sanderson of Melrose and is commemorated on the Alamein War Memorial, Egypt. He was employed in the Bank was a prominent athlete and played rugby for Melrose Rugby Club. He flew the Martin Baltimore light attack bomber with 55 Squadron R.A.F. and was lost attacking retreating German transport on the road from El Alamein to Mersa Matruh during the Battle of El Alamein and in support of the Eighth Army.
