Private John McDonald

Private John McDonald, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of wounds in hospital in France on 17th February 1917 aged 24. He had been born in Kilmallie, Argyllshire to Hugh and Margaret McDonald of Rose Cottage, Achnacarry, Spean Bridge, Inverness-shire and is buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France. Before enlisting he had lived and worked at St Mary’s Hotel at Cappercleugh, Yarrow. ( On the Memorial his name is spelt MacDonald ). At that time the Battalion was in front line trenches near Carnoy on the Somme and suffered some casualties from sporadic shellfire. His Headstone is inscribed ” Sleep Beloved Take thy Rest We Miss Thee Sorely Who Loved Thee Best”
