Private Robert Young

Private Robert Stewart Edmondston Young, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of wounds in the 19th General Hospital in Alexandria in Egypt on 22nd June 1917, aged 24. He had been born in Stichill and was the son of Walter and Cecilia Young of  Rutherford Burnside and Roxburgh Newton, Roxburghshire and is buried in Alexandra ( Hadra ) War Memorial Cemetery. Before enlisting he had been employed as a ploughman at Rutherford Burnside, Kelso.  He had been aboard the troopship “Ivernia” when it was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean whilst carrying reinforcements for the campaign against the Turks. (Most of the 2,400 troops were rescued ).
