Private Peter McCall

Private Peter McCall, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 4th June 1915, aged 34. He had been born in Edrom, Berwickshire and  was the son of Alexander and Catherine McCall of Maxton and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. Before enlisting in November 1914 he had been employed as a chaffeur by Herbert Ostiere of Arkleby Hall, Aspatria, Cumberland. He fell in an attack on Turkish trenches during the Battle of Krithia which was intended to cut the Peninsula in two. However despite a pre attack bombardment by two Pre Dreadnoughts ” Vengeance” and “Swiftsure”the plan failed and gains were minimal and casualties high. 1st K.O.S.B was part of the 29th Division which was comprised of Regular Battalions.  The first photograph is of H.M.S. “Swiftsure” and the second shows the Battalion going over the top that morning.
