Lance Corporal W. C. Milburn, 1st/4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France on 29th October 1916, aged 21, during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Heteburne Military Cemetery, Pas De Calais, France. His headstone is inscribed ” Peace Perfect Peace “. He was the son of Charles and Jemima Milburn. The first photograph shows a recently captured trench on the Somme with the chalk soil of the Region very evident. However the autumn rains turned the ground into a glutinous quagmire which made movement very difficult which can be seen from the photographs.
